Moving can be a stressful experience, especially when it comes to packing fragile items.

Whether it’s your favourite jewellery, a delicate vase or a cherished piece of artwork, its safety is primary during the transportation or moving.

Packing fragile items requires extra care. The right techniques are important to secure the item during transit.

To keep your fragile items safe during shifting, we’ve listed some tips to secure fragile items during transit.

Gather The Right Packing Supplies

Before you begin packing, it's important to have all the necessary supplies on hand. Having the right supplies can make your packing process smoother and more efficient.

Following is the list of essential packing materials for fragile items.

  • Sturdy Box: Use double-walled or high-quality boxes that can handle heavier and more delicate items without any damage.
  • Bubble Wrap: It provides cushioning and protection for fragile items.
  • Packing Tape: Use strong and wide tapes to securely seal your boxes.
  • Packing Paper: Packing paper is a superior choice for wrapping items and filling the empty spaces in boxes.
  • Markers/Labels: Label each box with “Fragile” to indicate that it requires special care.
  • Old Towels/Blankets: These can be used as extra padding inside the boxes for more protection during transit.

Prepare the Box Properly

To prevent any damage, it’s important to prepare the box before putting any fragile items into it.

You can reinforce the boxes and ensure they withstand pressure jerks during transportation.

  • Add Cushioning to Bottom: Place the crumpled packing paper on the surface of a packing box. To create cushioning below the box, you can also use a towel and bubble wrap. Cushioning the box base is important as it helps in absorbing shock.
  • Choose the Right-Sized Box: Avoid using oversized boxes for fragile items. Big boxes have spaces that can cause damage to fragile during transportation. Small boxes have fewer spaces and can be tightly filled. The leftover spaces can be filled easily with waste papers, etc.

If you prepared the box of fragile items before transportation correctly, then half of your work is done.

Wrap Each Fragile Items Individually

To prevent common problems such as scratches, breaks, and chips, wrapping each fragile item individually is mandatory. Following are the few steps suggested by packing and moving experts for wrapping fragile items.

  • More Security to Delicate Items: If we categorise fragile items into two categories, then category A is fragile items that aren’t delicate. Category B of fragile items which can be broken by any light movement or disruption. The Category B item requires more attention to safety while moving goods. You can use bubble wrap for best safety and tightly secure it with tape.
  • Wrapping of Small Fragile Items: Packing paper can be a better option for wrapping smaller fragile items. Items such as your ornaments, glassware and more. Packing paper provides them with an added layer of cushioning.
  • Double Wrapping: Some items are extremely delicate, like porcelain, crystals, etc. Consider wrapping packing paper around it for better protection.

Place Heavy Items At the Bottom

This is one of the basic and simple rules while packing fragile goods. If you are packing a number of fragile items into a bigger box, then place the heavy items at the bottom and the light ones above it.

Even after packing the items into boxes, place the box of heavy, fragile items at the bottom and light items above it.

If you place heavy objects over the lighter ones, heavy objects will crush them during transportation.

For example, you can place your delicate cutlery and above it, you can place lighter items. Cutleries not only manage to hold more weight but also provide more area and stability for a seamless transiting experience.

Using Padding Between Layers

If you would like to pack your items in layers, padding is essential. For padding, use only quality bubble wrap or packing paper. These two items prevent the possibility of damage to your fragile items by eliminating the chances of any movement of fragile items during transportation.

Fill Empty Spaces

A little empty space in your packing box can create severe harm to your fragile goods. Fill the empty spaces in your packing box with packing paper, bubble wraps, leftover thermocoals and more.

Note: To fill empty spaces, always use soft materials.

Avoid Overpacking

Do not overpack! Overpacking can increase the probability of a box bursting during transportation. If there is a small space left inside the box, then instead of filling it up with any item you can use soft products to completely fill it.

Using Specialised Boxes

Some fragile items require special boxes for better protection. Items like dishes, mirrors, artwork and more need specialised boxes for seamless transportation.

  • Packing Box for Dish: These are double-walled boxes and come with a partition in them for securing your delicate items throughout the transportation.
  • Boxes for Mirror/Pictures: These are flat boxes specially designed to protect the mirrors and framed artwork during transportation.
  • Wine Boxes: Wine boxes come with dividers (partitions in between them), Which helps the wine boxes stay in place throughout transportation.

Labelling the Boxes

Once you’ve packed and sealed your boxes with care, the next step is to label them precisely. Stick white paper on the boxes, and with a bold marker, write “FRAGILE” on the boxes in which you’ve stored delicate items.

If any item inside the box requires special handling, then write clearly “This Side Up” on the box.

  • Label According to Room: In addition to marking fragile items, also write the room name. It helps you during unloading, and you can easily place the box from which room it belongs.

Use Smaller Boxes

Larger boxes can store more items than smaller ones, but it is better to choose small boxes for packing fragile items. Pack fragile items collectively. Smaller boxes are also easy to carry and move.

Pack Electronics With Care

Electronic items, such as televisions, laptops and more gadgets, fall under the category of fragile items.

  • Using Original Boxes: Using the original box is a great idea. These boxes are specifically designed to protect that electronic item during transportation.
  • Wrap the cables separately: Unplug the cables and wrap them separately. Tie it safely by twisting and labelling them for easy reassembly.
  • Protect Screens: For devices and gadgets like televisions, computers and more, cover the screen with the best quality bubble wrap. Bubble wraps & soft cloths prevent the chances of scratches during transit.

Unpack Carefully

Just like packing, unpacking also requires special care. When you arrive at your new home, make unpacking fragile items a priority. Take your time and unpack them with special care. Place the items at the locations where they belong.

After unpacking, inspect each fragile item closely and look for any damage. If there is any damage, then you can claim insurance over it, if you have.

To claim insurance, take photos of your fragile goods before transportation.
